A Soulful Taste of the Burgh

Established in 2019 in commemoration of Pittsburgh's past food service pioneers and entrepreneurs, such as: Benjamin Richards, who, by 1788, set-up the first Black Butchery in Downtown Pittsburgh on 3rd avenue (current-Day #1 PPG Plaza); Charles Richards, who, by 1795, owned the first Black Restaurant & Lodge on Ferry street (present-Day Stanwix Street); Rev. John C. Peck who in 1838 opened the first Oyster House and Ice-cream Parlor on 3rd avenue; and, John R. Pulpress & Benjamin Pulpress who owned and operated the first Black Fish Stall inside Market Square and at The Allegheny Market House (Northside) on 26th & First Street*, we began this event to showcase Our historic legacy and the best Soul Food Restaurants in this region.
